High Resistance Cylinders

In my two clubs members were complaining they were not getting a good workout on some of the machines.  Specifically the Leg Press and Shoulder Press did not have enough resistance.  I searched and searched for alternative cylinders.  I finally located commercial, 4 wheel drive, off road vehicle componets that can be modified to fit our Curves machines.  Because these commercial cylinders do not work on all machines i worked with Gabriel and developed a Super Gabriel cylinder described below.

Super Gabriel - looks exactly like the original Gabriel.  This cylinder has more resistance than the original Gabriel and has resistance more even in both directions.

Originally developed and tested in clubs to improve the bicep/tricep and the hip abductor.  It will work on most machines.  On the obilque, leg curl, pec dec and lateral lift it seems to be a bit too much for me but there are clubs using these cylinder on these machines.

On double cylinders like the squat, dip shrug, chest back, shoulder press/Lat pull usually you can use one Super Gabriel in conjuction with an old cylinder.  This provides improved resistance and saves money.  You can always order another cylinder if you want even more resistance on these machines.

The Super Gabriel cylinder is a significant improvement on most machines over the standard cylinders available.

See table at bottom for machine recomendations.

It is available with zerk grease fittings, shown here, at additional cost.

I call this cylinder Type I.  It works very well on the Leg Press.  After comparing the approximately $400 kit to add two cylinders to the leg press I think this one cylinder actually performs better at significanly less cost.

In our clubs we have found this cylinder works on the leg press, Glute and Squat.

The charateristic of this cylinder is approximately a 60/40 split on the resistance.  This means about 60% of the resistance is felt as the cylinder moves out and about 40% as the cylinder moves in.

I call this cylinder Type II.  It works on the Shoulder Press and can be adapted with a blocking bar for the Ab Back

This cylinder is a true 50/50 cylinder meaning there is equal resistance in both directions.

The Shoulder press uses two cylinders.  I recommend owners start with one Type II cylinder and one of the the current old ones.  If there is a desire for more resistance then add a second Type II.

Cylinder Recomendations

I have received many questions about which cylinder to use on which machine.  Listed below are my recomendations that will give your machines the best resistance for the workout.

Note that the old standard Gabriel can be used on ALL machines.  Unfortunately, Gabriel no longer makes the standard Gabriel cylinder and will not sell me the replacement because its specifically made for one customer.  Most owners simply swap the best existing cylinders to the machines that need the standard Gabriel and equip the other machines with better cylinders.  If you need cylinders similar to the standard Gabreil contact the equipment manufacturer.

Higher resistance cylinders are machine specific.  On some double cylinder machines you can get away with replacing one cylinder if using a higher resistance cylinder.  See the recommendations below.  This will not cause an lop sided performance or other problems.
